ALASKA & HAWAII P1500s - the Ultras

64 Summits with Prominence of 1,500 meters or more (Alaska)

6 Summits with Prominence of 1,500 meters or more (Hawaii)

skip to Hawaii

Compiled 1999-2004 variously by Edward Earl, Adam Helman, Aaron Maizlish, Andy Martin, Ron Tagliapietra, and the bivouac.com team.

NOTE:  In preparing this list, I have tried to correct several errors that occur on other Alaska lists.  I believe most of the differences have been reconciled (or are due to differing methodologies), however there is still a possibility of further corrections to this list.  For those interested in the Alaska list, it also occurs in three other places:
Fifty finest list prepared (1999) by Andy Martin and Ron Tagliapietra, printed in
County High Points, available from the author for $15 ppd.
Original list (2003) prepared by Adam Helman, available on the cohp.org website.
Work in progress on the Bivouac.com website (by membership.)

Also be sure to check out the 2003 Alaska Mountain Prominence Map that I prepared.  The map needs a few mountains added on based on Adam's research.

A REMINDER:  Prominence for Alaska and the rest of the United States is computed differently than the rest of the world.  American hikers tend to prefer "Clean Prominence" - that is the minimum possible prominence value within the contour intervals that appear on standard USGS topographic quadrangles.  The rest of the world uses "Interpolated Prominence" - that is the best guess estimate of the actual saddle elevation within the contour interval, often derived by adding half of a contour interval to the total.  The result is that US prominence values tend to be understated a bit relative to the rest of the world.

In the case of Alaska we have spot elevations for 56 of the 65 summits, generally from USGS or the more recent Canadian surveys, or in a couple of instances from other sources.  In the case of the saddles, the interval on the 1:63,360 maps is generally 100 feet, and sometimes 50 feet.  This means that in most cases, the Clean Prominence is 50-100 lower than the Interpolated Prominence.

In order to reconcile this list with the rest of the world's Ultras, I have elected to show the Interpolated Prominence in Meters (comparing like for like) and the Clean Prominence in Feet (to aid Americans who are comparing this data to USGS maps.  If this is at all confusing, please contact the author.

FOOTNOTES

[1] See World Top 50 for notes.  The interpolated saddle is dervied from SRTM analysis, and is inconsistent with the Nicaraguan 1:50,000 survey shown in feet to the right.

[2] Fairweather is the HP of British Columbia, on the US/Canada border. The 15,325' elevation is based on a newer Canadian Survey. USGS shows 15,300'. Saddle elevation researched by bivouac.com.

[5] Saddle is on Columbus Glacier.

[7] 9372' in GNIS.

[13] USGS Maps show Mt. Isto as possibly higher than Mt Chamberlin, although Chamberlin is believed to be higher. Saddle is McDougal Pass (67°42' 136°27') per bivouac.com.

[15]  Mt. Cook:  According to the Canadian topographic map, the summit is about 500' north of the border, in Canada.  According to the USGS map, the summit lies exactly on the border.
