ANDORRA

22 SUMMITS WITH 150 METER OR GREATER PROMINENCE

Introduction

Andorra is a tiny European state of only some 470 square kilometres in the Eastern Pyrenees, inset between the borders of France and Spain.  It has a population of 64,000, but an estimated 9 million tourists visit annually – in winter for the skiing, and in summer for walking and other activities.  The capital is Andorra la Vella.  The official language is Catalan, although French and Spanish are also spoken.  The Euro is the unit of currency, although the principality is only affiliated to the European Union and not a member.  Under a treaty dating back originally to 1278, it has two heads of state, the French Head of State and the Spanish bishop of Urgell.  Their position is mainly ceremonial, however, with power being in the hands of a democratically elected government.

The principal economic activity of the principality is the production of leatherwear and also tourism.  The principality derives much of its wealth from its banking services as a tax haven.

For further information on the principality and its mountains, see ‘The Mountains of Andorra’ by Alf  Robertson and Jane Meadowcroft, published in English in the UK by Cicerone.

The list

List by Clem Clements, with help from Mark Trengove, and computer assistance from Jonathan de Ferranti.

Clem Clements and Mark Trengove have provided this list of summits in the Principality of Andorra.  This group includes one summit of at least 600m (‘Major Prominence’), and a total of 22 summits of P150m of whatever altitude.  All of these are over 2000m (c.6,000 ft) in altitude.

This group of mountains lies along the frontier ridges of Andorra with France and Spain, or within the principality itself.  Please note that the most prominent summit in Andorra is different than the National high point.
