RUSSIA:   KAMCHATKA AND THE RUSSIAN PACIFIC ISLANDS

ULTRA-PROMINENCE PAGE

30 Peaks with Prominence of 1,500 meters or greater

List compiled 2004 by Aaron Maizlish
with computer assistance from Jonathan de Ferranti

The Kamchatka Peninsula in Northeastern Russia forms a  physical region distinct from the rest of Siberia and the Russian Far East.  Kamchatka is a region with over 100 active volcanoes, the highest of which, Kluchevskoy Volcano, is the 13th most prominent summit on earth.  We have identified 22 summits on the peninsula with 1,500 meters or greater prominence.  The Kuril Islands (Kuril'skiye Ostrova) are a chain of volcanic islands that extend southwestly from  Kamchatka for 700 miles to Hokkaido, Japan.  The Kurils have seven ultras on five islands.  In addition the highpoint of the island of Sakhalin has been included on this list.

This page for the first time proposes precise prominence values for Kamchatka, as well as precise latitude and longitude coordinates for the summit.  It is important to note that this is not a complete listing of volcanoes, nor does include all of the highest volcanoes.  For an explanation of prominence please return to the peaklist.org homepage.

NOTES:

Summit Name:  English translation of Kamchatka Volcanoes.  V. represents Volcano.

Region Name:  List includes 22 summits on Kamchatka Peninsula, 7 summits on the Kuril Islands, and 1 summit on Sakhalin.

Elevation:  Elevations are taken exclusively from Soviet 1:100,000 and 1:200,000 topographic mapping.  Any readers with access to newer authoritive elevations are encouraged to contact the list authors.

Prominence:  Prominence has been derived from extensive analysis of
SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) 3" data.  SRTM derived saddle values were found to concur with printed contour intervals in all but two cases.   We believe that SRTM 3" saddle values will be within 15 meters of the actual value with 95% accuracy.

Saddle:  Saddle values and contour intervals in the above table were extracted  from  SRTM data or Soviet maps.   We are pleased to report that SRTM saddle values are within the contour interval of the Soviet topographic mapping in every case except the Avachinsky KS, which is duly noted below.

[2]   Shiveluch Volcano:  Elevation of 3,307m was taken from recent 1:200,000 topographic map.  Several alternate elevations have been given.  Also, the volcano has been very active.  Clarification of the current elevation would be appreciated.

[26]  Avachinsky Volcano:  1:200,000 mapping indicates saddle is between 1200-1280 meters.  SRTM value of 1,191 meters has been used,
