ULTRA-PROMINENCE PAGE

35 Peaks with Prominence of 1,500 meters or greater

List compiled 2004 by Aaron Maizlish, Eberhard Jurgalski
with computer assistance from Jonathan de Ferranti

The following list represents new research carried out in Fall 2004.  Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data was extensively used to compare summit and saddle elevations to printed maps.  In virtually every case we compared the data to 1:100,000 topographic maps published by the Soviets between 1978-1991.  This has been supplemented with some data from mountaineering and Chinese sources.

The research reveals 35 summits that lie within the boundaries of the five Central Asian Republics.  It is important to note that numerous additional summits occur in China, within a few miles of the Kyrgyz and Kazakh borders.  A complete picture of the structure of the High Asian will need to ignore political boundaries.  By early 2005 we expect the primary listings of Asian ultra-prominences to be complete and to be able to provide a complete geographical picture of High Asia.

By country, the 35 peaks are as follows:

Kazakhstan         6
Kyrgyzstan        11
Tajikistan        20
Turkmenistan       2
Uzbekistan         1

We would be grateful to reviewers who can provide us with recent name changes if any.  We believe that some of the Tajik summits have not been climbed.

NOTES:

[6] The Key Saddle, called Kashayalak Pass, is 4,281m according to the 100k topographic map.  SRTM suggests it is 4344m, and smaller scale maps give an alternate value of 4330m.  The KS is on a glacier, and we have generally found these values to disagree most.

[10]   The KS is Tanymas Pass, 4,498m according to the topographic map and ±4538m according to SRTM.  As the pass is on a glacier, we have used the SRTM value.

[12] Soviet 1:100,000 map gives 4,336m for key saddle at Kyzyl-Art.  SRTM provides a lower value, c. 4263m, 4 km. to the west, which is in complete disagreement with the map.

[14] Semionova Tien-Shanskogo (elev. 4,895.4m) is the high point of the often visited AlaArcha range.  The Soviet 1:100,000 map labels the wrong peak.  Also the commonly-held elevation of 4,875m should be disregarded.  Thanks to Martin Gamache of the Alpine Mapping Guild for the clarification.   The mountain is alternately spelled Semenova T... as well as Tyan-, Tian-, and Tien- with and without hyphens.

[16] AKA Soviet Officers Peak

[19] A desert peak near the Caspian Sea, far removed from the High Asian peaks.

[22]  A Chinese map gives a saddle at 5225m (between Khan-Tengri and Pobeda), but we suspect the Soviet mapping is better.

[23] There are two possible highpoints, about 3 km. apart.

[24] Topographic map gives 3920m-40m for key saddle, which is on a glacier.  SRTM suggsts value is closer to 3867m.
