The Karakoram, Pakistan Himalaya and India Himalaya (north of Nepal)

68 Mountain Summits with Prominence of 1,500 meters or greater

Welcome to the big list,  corresponding to "I" on the map of Asia. Please send comments to webmaster.

The Asian section of the Ultra-Prominences project is divided into twenty lists.  In most cases this corresponds to national boundaries.  However this method does not work for High Asia - where boundaries often follow major ridgelines, and large regions are in dispute.   "High Asia" - the region of the Karakoram , Himalaya, and the Tibetan Plateau has been divided into multiple lists based on geography, and the lists are further subdivided for clarity.

The following list is one of the most fascinating and complex mountainous regions of the world.  Perhaps not surprisingly, the high Karakoram is very dense with ultra-prominent mountains.  All of the 8000 meter peaks in the region have >1,500 meters of prominence.  There are also some intriguing lower unnamed (and perhaps unclimbed?) range high points on the list.

If you are interested in knowing the highest mountains of the world, the wikipedia list, maintained by Arian Smit, is excellent and also reflects the research we have done into prominence. There is also ongoing research and list development on Eberhard Jurgalski's website: www.8000ers.com.

FOOTNOTES

We strive to have the most accurate summit elevations in every instance.  Unfortunately, there is a high degree of disagreement on both summit and saddle elevations in various surveys in this region of the world.  Many of the elevations have been taken from the mountaineering literature and from the personal experience of Eberhard Jurgalski, who has been researching the mountains of the area for more than 20 years.  The authors are always happy to learn about new, more accurate surveys, and we welcome your submissions if you wish to share new data.  Many of the saddle elevations have been derived from Soviet 1:200,000 mapping, Survey of India mapping, Chinese commercial publications, and from detailed analysis of SRTM data.  Where there is a high degree of concurrence, published elevations are used.  However in some regions, where SRTM strongly disagree with published elevations, we provisionally favor the SRTM data. Names in quotation marks are not known to have any official sanction.

Pakistan West of Hunza
[A6] We assume that Thalo Zom is higher than Harambit Zom at 6031m.

Karakoram

[B1] The elevation reference for K2 is this modern survey that appears to completely supercede the widely known 8611 meter measurement.
[B2] Sometimes given as 7785m.  This elevation taken from Chinese Snow Map.
[B4] Alternate spelling Distaghil Sar.
[B5] Elevation of the key saddle Masherbrum La is 5240m according to Soviet maps, and 5364m according to more recent commercial publications.
[B6] Saser Kangri II, immediately to the southeast, appears to just barely miss ultra-prominence status. As long as you're up there anyway you might want to bag it to be sure :-)

[B8] Karun Kuh. The elevation has been corrected to 6977m, from the old figure of 7164m that was previously cited on this page.

[B10] Soviet elevation of 7671 is wrong.
[B11] Old elevation of 8068m
[B19] New elevation from Snow Map
[B22] Saddle elevation is approximate.
[B26] 6810m on the Snow Map
[B28] Saddle uncertain.

Ladakh Range

[C2]  Unknown "Kailas" - According to the Soviet maps, this peak is in the Kailash Range, but this is not to be confused with the holy Mt. Kailash.  The 1989 "Map of Mountain Peaks of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau" gives the peak an elevation of 6219m.  SRTM indicates that it is about P6300, and slightly higher than the nearby peak  P6295 on the Russian map.

[C4]  "Kataklik Kangri" is our working name for the mountain on the India/Chinese Line of Control.  We used the elevation of 6897m from the Soviet 1:100,000 map.  There are two peaks slightly south that the Russian map shows as lower but which may be similar in height.  The 1934 Visser map puts one of these peaks at 6952m, and the US aeronautical charts, which are generally less reliable, put the other peak variously at 6962m (ONC) or 6974m (TPC).  The mountains are void on the SRTM, but in general SRTM and the Russian survey concur in this area.

Himalaya between Indus and Sutlej
[D11] The old elevation of 6492m is believed inaccurate
[D12] The Soviet topographic map gives a spot elevation of 5629m, but a nearby contour interval of 5760-5840m. SRTM has a small local void so there is room for some doubt, but generally SRTM/SOV200 agreement in this area is quite good.
[D-E3] From this summit Colonel Montgomerie first saw K2 and all the other K-summits in 1856. The name he gave to K2 has stuck.

Himalaya between Sutlej and Kali
[E3] We have not confirmed the elevation of Rangrik Rang. Soviet mapping gives 6684m, but this is not necessarily accurate. An older publication gives 6533m but also has a high contour of 6700-6800m. SRTM suggests the summit is lower.
[E4] In this, and many other instances, the SRTM derived saddle elevation is believed to be far more accurate than the pass elevations on the Soviet topographic maps.
[E5]Soviet saddle likely in gross error

PRECISE DESCRIPTIONS OF BOUNDARIES

SECTION 1:  PAKISTAN WEST OF HUNZA RIVER AND EAST OF CHITRAL RIVER

This section,  controlled by Pakistan, is dominated by the Hindu Raj and Swat Kohistan.  This is the Hunza, Chitral, Gilgit Territories, and Swat regions.  The eastern boundary is Khunjerab Pass and the Hunza River.   The western boundary is Karambar Pass and the Chitral River.  The resulting orometric region naturally includes a small part of Afghanistan and China, but there are no ultra summits there.   For ultras in the Hindu Kush and further west and south, see the Pakistan page.

SECTION 2:  THE KARAKORAM RANGE

The Karakoram proper has an impressive number of prominent mountains.  The western boundary is the Karambar Pass leading to the Hunza River as far south as its confluence with the Indus near Gilgit.  The Southeastern boundary is the Karakoram Pass leading to the Shyok River and Indus River.  This includes several summits on the side controlled by China.  Follow the drainages from the Karambar and Karakoram Passes down the Yarkant He River to the confluence.  The region includes Rakaposhi but not Nanga Parbat, which is in Section 4.

SECTION 3:  LADAKH RANGE & SMALL SECTION OF INDIA BETWEEN INDUS AND SHYOK RIVERS

This is a small section that includes the Ladakh Range and all areas to the east of the Indus River controlled by India.   Given that there is no logical river boundary on the Chinese side, we used the border as a cut off.

SECTION 4:  HIMALAYAN RANGES BETWEEN INDUS RIVER AND SUTLEJ RIVER

This is a substantial section of the Indian Himalaya extending into Pakistan and China.  The Nothern boundary is the Indus River, and the Southern boundary is the Sutlej River, both of which flow out of Tibet and merge in the Punjab.  The area includes much of Kashmir - the Zaskar, Srinigar, and Indus Kohistan regions, and most of Himachal Pradesh.  At the far north is Nanga Parbat, the section's sole 8000 meter peak.  The eastern boundary is in Tibet at a saddle called Jerko La (according to the Times Atlas).  Although this is a substantial chunk of Tibet, there do not appear to be any ultras entirely on the Chinese side.

SECTION 5:  HIMALAYA BETWEEN SUTLEJ RIVER AND KALI RIVER (NEPAL BORDER)

Between the Sutlej and Kali Rivers are several Indian ultra-prominences.  This area includes the southern part of Himachal Pradesh, and the Himalayan region of Uttar Pradesh (Uttaranchal).   Mountains further to the East (e.g. in Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Eastern India) may be found on the High Asia II and High Asia III lists.
