FOOTNOTES

We strive to have the most accurate summit elevations in every instance.  Unfortunately, the authors have not had access to large-scale topographic mapping of the Arabian Peninsula.  We invite your comments and/or corrections if you have access to the most recent topographic surveys (1:50,000) or other elevation data.

The elevations for Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman were derived from Soviet 1:200,000 mapping and from detailed analysis of SRTM data.  Where there was a high degree of concurrence, elevations from the Soviet maps are used.  In several cases however, the elevations are estimated from SRTM data

S1:  Jebel Katarina:  Has many different English spelling variations, also commonly spelled Jabal Katrina or Katharina.  This is the highpoint of the Sinai Peninsula, not nearby Jebel Musa (Mt. Sinai) as might be commonly believed.  The Sinai is properly part of Asia, not Africa.
Israeli surveys give elevations of both 2,642m (older) and 2,629m (newer).  No subsequent Egyptian survey was found.  The key saddle for Katarina is the saddle that separates the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat from the Dead Sea depression.  The value was taken from the modern 1:25,000 topographic map that suggests 220m-230m asl.  If the Dead Sea basin were to fill to overflowing, the lake would not drain into the Red Sea, as one might imagine, but would drain to the Mediterranean near Haifa.

S3:  Mt. Hermon:  In Arabic, Jebel esh Shaikh.  The key saddle is between 1000m and 1020m, according to Lebanese topographic maps.

A1:
Jebel an Nabi Shu'ayb is the highpoint of Yemen.  Elevations vary widely, with the "official" elevation being 3760m.  The highest local 3" SRTM cell is 3653m., which is consistent with a true elevation in the range of 3660-3680m.  3666m is also a published figure, which we believe is the most accurate.

A5:  The highpoint of Saudi Arabia is not a true ultra-prominence.  Jabal Sawda has an official elevation of 3133m, but SRTM suggests that the actual elevation is close to 3000m.  See also deFerranti's analysis of correct elevations of highpoints.

A9:  Socotra is an island belonging to Yemen in the Indian Ocean.  The elevation of Hajhir is derived from the British DOS survey.  There are several other published values.

E1:  Appears to barely miss the 1,500m cut, but is almost too close to call.

I1:  Kuh-e-Haji Ebrahim: Saddle elevation taken from Soviet topographic map showing contour of 1840-40.

I2:
Cheekha Dar appears as "Bozdag" on the Soviet map.  Cheekha dar is a Kurdish name meaning "Black Tent", a reference to the shape of the mountain.  We believe this mountain is higher than Hasar Rost, and thus also the highpoint of Iraq, according to information provided by Ginge Fullen.
